Behavioral Health Facility Technology Design

A community-based mental health organization operating multiple campuses was planning the construction of a new facility to serve both voluntary and involuntary patients. Recognizing the critical importance of safety, they sought expert guidance to design the building and security technology to protect patients and staff alike.

SRMC’s Approach

SRMC collaborated closely with the owner, architect, general contractor, and sub-contractors to ensure the facility’s design and construction prioritized the safety of both patients and staff. Our team provided guidance on the selection and strategic placement of video surveillance systems and access control points, as well as specifications for shatter and bullet-resistant glazing films, ballistic-rated doors, and Kevlar-based wall insulation. These recommendations drew upon SRMC’s extensive experience in behavioral health environments, executive protection, and security technology design.

Results

The facility has quickly become a valuable community resource providing residential behavioral health and substance abuse treatment, as well as serving as a receiving facility for individuals experiencing acute psychological crises that may pose a risk of self-harm or harm to others. The organization implemented all of SRMC’s recommendations, resulting in a safe, secure, and supportive environment for effective mental health and substance abuse treatment.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates SRMC’s dual role as a security expert and strategic partner. Leveraging industry expertise, practical experience, and systematic evaluation, SRMC guided the organization in creating a lasting, community-focused facility.
